The Port of Galveston Propeller Club Awards Eight Scholarships and Honors Captain Karl Fanning

The Port of Galveston Propeller Club has awarded eight Texas A&M University at Galveston students with scholarships. 

Ruthie Williams received of the Captain Karl Fanning Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $2000. Jonathan Babb, Sarah Moss, Jonathan Bush, Amanda Scherer, Jared Garner, Sara Broadrick, and Justin Rashall were each awarded $1000 scholarships for the 2007 – 2008 academic year.

Justin Rashall who serves as the president of the Student Propeller Club congratulated all the recipients “I would like to send a special Congratulations to Ruthie Williams one our current vice president, who received the first scholarship from the Port of Galveston Propeller Club in memory of Captain Fanning." Ms. Williams was selected for her high GPA and participation in the club.

Professor John Schwarz, a long-time member of the club, said, "Karl was so involved with the Student Propeller Club we wanted to honor him."  

Captain Fanning was an assistant professor at Texas A&M University in Galveston from 1970 to 1975.  In 2001 after retiring from a career at sea, he took a post as senior lecturer in Maritime Administration at Texas A&M University at Galveston.  Captain Fanning died on May 20, 2007.

Applications for the Port of Galveston Propeller Club are available each Spring through the Financial Aid Office.
