Texas A&M University at Galveston students Cadet Carl Brynestad and Cadet Shawn Ouellette were commissioned as Ensigns in the United States Naval Reserve and Midshipman Danielle Lawson were commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy on Friday, May 9, 2008, at a ceremony at the Gazebo at the San Luis Resort and Hotel. All three will receive their diplomas on Saturday during commencement exercises for Texas A&M University at Galveston. Both Ensign Brynestad and Ouellette will earn bachelors degrees in Marine Transportation, while Ensign Lawson will earn a bachelors degree in Marine Biology. RADM William W. Pickavance, Jr. '68 (U.S. Navy retired) presented the key note address.
About Ensign Carl Brynestad Ensign Carl Brynestad was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. At the age of four, he and his family moved to Monterey California, and shortly thereafter to Naples, Italy. While there he learned to appreciate pizza, pasta, and bella regazza. After two years in Italy, the Brynestads returned to the United States where they made their home in Sierra Vista, Arizona. Upon high school graduation it seemed only natural for Ensign Brynstad to choose a maritime education following in the sea-faring tradition of his mother, father and all four grandparents who served in the U.S. Navy for a combined total of over 65 years. While attending Texas A&M at Galveston Ensign Brynestad has served in various leadership positions, most recently as Company Commanding Officer within the Texas Maritime Academy. He has received numerous student awards, most notably the Reserve Officer’s Association award, given to a midshipman/cadet who has demonstrated outstanding competence in the arts and sciences of National Defense. Ensign Brynestad plans to see the world in his career as an officer in the US Merchant Marine and Naval Reserves. About Ensign Shawn Ouellette
He began his career on the water in his hometown near Newport, Rhode Island, employed as a deckhand on a ferry boat at age 14. Ensign Ouellette graduated from LaSalle Academy in Providence, Rhode Island in 2004, and enrolled at Texas A&M University at Galveston that fall. He has held numerous positions including Chief Mate on a dinner boat, and Company Commander here at TAMUG. This May he will sit for his USCG Third Mate’s License for vessels of any gross tonnage. He plans to make a career out of sailing the high seas as a Merchant Marine in the Naval Reserve.
About Ensign Danielle Lawson Ensign Danielle L. Lawson, a native of Canyon Lake, Texas, came to Texas A&M University at Galveston after graduating from Smithson Valley High School in 2004. She will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology. While attending TAMUG, Ensign Lawson has served as a Leading Petty Officer, a Division Officer, Company Executive Officer, and Company Commanding Officer for the NROTC Unit. During her senior year, she was a Community Leader within the residence halls. Ensign Lawson has received the following awards: Navy three-year scholarship, a Naval Officer’s sword from the Council of the Navy League, the Texas Navy Leadership award (two consecutive years), the Jim and Betty Sterling scholarship, the William P. Ricker Memorial scholarship, the Military Order of the World Wars award for military excellence, the Professor of Naval Science ribbon, and ribbons for community service, academics, sailing, and participation in color guards and drill team. Upon receiving her commission, Ensign Lawson will report to Naval Flight School, NAS Pensacola, Florida, as she has been selected for training as a pilot.
