TAMUG Breaks Ground on Science Complex |
Texas A&M University at Galveston honored long-time faculty member and administrator Dr. Jim McCloy with a retirement Luau on Friday, May 9, 2008. McCloy retired after thirty-six years of service to TAMUG. He received his bachelors degree in Geography from State College of Los Angeles and his doctorate in Physical Geography with a minor in Cultural Geography from Louisiana State University. After serving in the United States Army as a cryptographer, he began his academic and research career. In 1972, he became an assistant professor at the College of Marine Sciences and Maritime Resources in Galveston (later called Texas A&M University at Galveston). As a professor for Marine Sciences and Maritime Administration at TAMUG and as a professor for Geography and Program of Water Management and Hydrological Sciences at TAMU, Dr. McCloy taught until December of 2007. Additionally, he served the university in a variety of administrative roles; Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Head of the Department of General Academics, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Associate Campus Dean for Academic Affairs, Superintendent of the Texas Maritime Academy, Associate Vice President for Research and Academic Affairs, and in numerous interim leadership roles. Known nationally for his expertise in beach systems and safety, McCloy served locally in several organizations including the Galveston County Beach Patrol, the Galveston Parks Board, and the American Red Cross. The luau in his honor included an original sea chantey by Regents Professor of English, Dr. Stephen Curley and poem by former Vice President and CEO, Mike Kemp. Deb and Vic Maceo presented McCloy with a photograph of the original beach patrol along with a replica lifeguard stand as tribute to his contributions to the safety of our beaches. On behalf of the faculty, staff and students of TAMUG, Steven Conway presented McCloy with a one-of-a-kind Hawaiian shirt featuring images of the campus during his tenure. McCloy is known for, among other things, his many colorful Hawaiian shirts. Dr. R. Bowen Loftin, Vice President and CEO, announced the establishment of the James M. McCloy Coastal Geography Program. Collections in the program will include a variety of geographical items such as maps, photos, slides, and GIS data sets. Established and housed in the library, the program includes two high-end geographical information systems with access to a wide range of data. Dr. McCloy demonstrated tremendous vision in realizing the potential of technology in the study of geography. His efforts and support of the development and use of these technologies will have a lasting effect on the lives of the many students he taught and those who will continue to study through the program named in his honor. Dr. McCloy has been elevated to Professor Emeritus. He and his wife Pat reside in Galveston. |
