Finscan is a program to assist researchers in reidentifying sharks, dolphins, and whales from images of the trailing edges of their dorsal fins and flukes. The computer-driven system analyzes “best fit” photos and shows these best fits to let the human investigator make the final choice. Finscan is constantly upgraded, and is under development to provide splotch-spot pattern analysis of flukes and sides of gray whales and select dolphin species. Program development is a collaboration between Texas A&M University, the University of Texas Medical Branch, and Yale University personnel. |
