Every tenured and tenure-track faculty member in the
Marine Sciences Department is actively engaged in scholarly research. Our
oceanography faculty members are world recognized in their field, and
operate a very large (and well funded) program. To access detailed
descriptions of much of their work, see
Laboratory for Oceanographic and
Environmental Research (LOER).
Two other areas of active research are Theory and
Marine Policy.
The theory group is well funded. It consists of
5 faculty members who carry out research ranging from nanotechnology to
numerical simulation of coastal processes. The theory group
publishes over 15 papers a year in peer reviewed scientific journals.
Our marine policy faculty members write books
and articles that seek to bring cutting edge science and economics to the
decision making process. This growing area of research supports the
Masters Degree in Marine Resources Management. Visit the
Center for
Texas Beaches and Shores site.
One of the advantages of attending a small, special
purpose University with excellent facilities and active research programs,
is the opportunity for students to engage in scholarly research while
still undergraduates (and often for pay). Most of our laboratories employ
one or more (usually more) students as an integral part of their research
programs. Students have graduated as co-authors of peer reviewed papers,
and as co-inventors on patents. Every student, whether employed or not,
has the opportunity to take MARS or OCRE 485 (Directed Studies) as part of
their curriculum in which they work directly with a faculty member on a
project of the student’s choice.
